Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Beginners in Miami

Never trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu before? That's completely normal. Many of our students walked into their first class with no martial arts experience at all.

Beginner and experienced students together at Gama Filho Martial Arts

Your first class

Plan to arrive about ten minutes early so we can say hello, show you around and answer questions. A coach will walk you through the warm-up and the technique of the day, and you'll practice it slowly with a partner.

Nobody expects you to know anything. You won't be thrown into hard sparring on day one.

Technique before intensity

Beginners learn the basics first: how to fall safely, how to move on the ground, how to escape bad positions. Intensity grows as your understanding does. Being fit helps, but it isn't a requirement. Most people get in shape by training, not before.

QUESTIONS

Common questions

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu good for complete beginners?

Yes. Classes are structured to teach fundamentals step by step, and most of our students started with no experience.

Do I need to be in shape before starting BJJ?

No. You'll build conditioning as you train. Coaches help you work at a pace that fits you.

What should I wear to my first class?

Comfortable athletic clothes without zippers.

Can adults start Jiu-Jitsu later in life?

Yes. Adult classes are open to students 14 and up, and many members started as adults.

How often should beginners train?

Two classes a week is a comfortable start for most people. Talk with your coach after your trial and they'll help you plan.
